Our current research projects include: US-China Relations, China’s Community with Shared Future, China’s Belt and Road Initiative, Diplomacy and International Relations Theory, Global Media

China’s Community with Shared Future

China advanced a concept for the international community based on the objective of peace and development.. The new concept is called “Community with Shared Future”.

United States-China Relations

US-China relations are at a low point and steps must be taken to deescalate tensions and to engage in constructive dialogue. Cooperation in areas of common concern must be encouraged. WIPD is engaged in constructive dialogue and exchanges with Chinese academic colleagues. WIPD is actively present in Chinese media through columns, opinion pieces, and interviews.

China’s Belt and Road Initiative

China’s Belt and Road is an historic undertaking and modern day version of the ancient Silk Route by land and ancient maritime trade routes. Countries involved have their own development models and benefit from economic as well as cultural exchange. WIPD endorses the Belt and Road vision and its practical implementation.

Diplomacy and International Relations Theory

Diplomacy is the fundamental element in international relations. WIPD promotes diplomatic dialogue, constructive engagement, and peace research. WIPD conducts research on the contemporary international situation as well as on diplomatic history. WIPD endorses the United Nations and International Law for peace and sustainable development. At the academic level, WIPD follows in the tradition of the old Virginia School of International Relations at the University of Virginia as represented by scholars such as Quincy Wright (1890-1970) and Innis L. Claude (1922-2013) who taught at the University of Virginia as did diplomatic historian, Norman Graebner (1915-2010) and political scientist, Shaochuan Leng (1921-2000) . John Bassett Moore (1850-1947), authority on International Law and US diplomat, graduated from the University of Virginia.

Global Media and Propaganda

WIPD researches global media and communications issues. In the world today, the international system is trending toward multipolarity, polycentrism, and pluralism. In this context, the role and weight of various communications systems is in flux. The Western domination of global media is in slow decline and alternative platforms and voices emerge on the world stage. Because Western media is often used to disseminate state propaganda WIPD conducts research on Western theories and practice of propaganda.
